About "Abrir Paso"
The Abrir paso series, Libros 1, 2, 3 and 4 are content based books meant to teach language through the culture. Starting with a cultural theme, for example the Galápagos Islands, the Alhambra, or García Márquez, each thematic unit takes the student through a level appropriate reading, comprehension and grammar exercises, followed by oral and written assignments and capped with a key word list to continue learning about the subject on the web.
The units are written as thematic units, combining content with language study. It is the content that drives each unit and every exercise included is information based. Thus the Galapagos Islands are presented as both an ecological wonderland and a critical place if we are to save endangered species; the Jesuit missions in Paraguay show the great contradiction of Spanish rule, the marimba is analyzed as having Spanish, indigenous and African elements.
The variety of topics invites students to discover the wonderful cultural richness of both Spain and the Spanish speaking countries of the Americas. What do you know about the roots of Dominican baseball? Find out!
